THE GENERAL SUPERIOR

Fr. Donald Barnd, SCJ, died in his sleep in the morning about 2 am on October 23, 2015, at Congregational Home in Brookfield WI. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Community at SHML, having earned his retirement in 1988.

Don was the son of Mary McCarthy and Sylvester Barnd, a native of Morris MN. He was born January 19, 1922. Don served with the US Navy during World War II as an aircraft mechanic. He professed with the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart on March 19, 1952 and was ordained on December 16, 1978.

During his years with the province, Don served at many of our formation houses across the country assisting with their maintenance needs. He also served St. Mary’s Church in De Aar, South Africa.

He began studies at Sacred Heart School of Theology in 1975, earning his M.Div. as he prepared for ordination to the priesthood. Following ordination he went to South Dakota, spending a number of years in Sioux Falls, Pierre and Murdo in various appointments.

Although Don was given permission to retire in 1988 and take up residence at Villa Maria, he seldom remained in one place for too long. Often he was on the road to the four corners of the USA to provide assistance to other pastors needing time for vacation or sabbatical. Like the proverbial stone, he did not gather too much dust staying in one place. Don was a resident of Congregational Home in Brookfield in recent years.

Don is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Richard, Dorothy and Robert. He is survived by various nephews and nieces as well as his brothers in community.
