Father Johannes van Berkel was born on October 13, 1929 and was 91 years old. He took his first vows on October 7, 1950 and was ordained priest on December 18, 1955.
He was currently living in Gemert (Netherlands). He belonged to the Province NLV.
Do not let your hearts be troubled. You trust in God, trust also in me. (Jn 14:1)
On Sunday, January 10, 2021, our confrere Fr. Johannes passed away in the house of Gemert. He was a member of the Confederation of the Dutch and Flemish Province of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Jan attended the minor seminary in Heeswijk (1943-1949). He then continued his formation at our Congregation. His first appointment as a priest was studying German and teaching at Christus Koning in Helmond (1956-1967). When the seminary was closed, Jan became treasurer of the Juvenaat in Bergen. But he felt more inclined to pastoral work and began a long period of pastoral service: In the parish of Made (1973-1985) and until 1994 he served as chaplain at Elkerliek Hospital in Helmond. He was later transferred to Bakel. Jan maintained his love for the German language: he had many pastoral contacts with the sisters in Germany. He also received several assignments in our Province: as rector of the regional community of Helmond (1995-2004), and for more than 15 years he was a member of the Finance Commission. For many years he sympathized with the community of Asten. Yet he preferred to feel “at home” in Bakel, even close to his family members. In late 2020, Jan moved to Gemert to receive better care.
We remember Father Jan van Berkel in our prayers.
