We celebrate the 25th anniversary of the beatification of the Dehonian religious Juan María de la Cruz. Pope John Paul II beatified him in Rome on March 11, 2001, with 232 Spanish martyrs, for giving his life for Jesus Christ.

We remember Fr. Juan María de la Cruz, patron of Dehonian vocations, as a tireless seeker of God’s will who did not compromise his deepest convictions.

His life and his death are an example for everyone to follow.

Blessed Juan María de la Cruz (Mariano García Méndez), the first martyr of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Dehonians), is known for his profound spirituality of reparation and devotion. Although his life was a witness of silence and sacrifice, there remains an offering prayer that perfectly summarizes his charism and his readiness for martyrdom. This prayer reflects his union with the Heart of Jesus.

of the soul of Jesus Christ.
Blessed be God!
May His divine will be done
in me and in everything.
Jesus Christ is the Truth,
the divine Light that illuminates minds
and has come to dispel,
through its radiant splendors,
the darkness of error.
Yes, dearly beloved,
God is Charity,
God is Love.
I rejoice to be able
to suffer for Him,
who suffered so much for me,
a poor sinner.
Yes, my brothers, Jesus Christ
is Way, Truth, and Life.
He Himself said so.
And Jesus Christ is the Life of our souls.
He is also the delight and the life
of our heart.
Jesus Christ is charity,
that is to say, God is Charity,
as His beloved Apostle said:
God is love.
Blessed is he who is fortunate enough
to shed his blood for Our Lord!
Yes, dearly beloved,
God is Charity, Jesus Christ is Charity.
The Heart of Jesus is the source
of life and holiness.
What then, my brothers, is devotion to the Heart of Jesus?
It is the devotion of charity, it is the devotion of love,
of the love of Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ our Lord is the royal
Way by which we must go to the Father,
the golden ladder by which
we must ascend to heaven.
In a symbolic sense,
the Heart of Jesus is the Love of Jesus Christ,
it is the Charity of Jesus Christ.
O God of our hearts! Give us your love, and nothing
and no one will be able to separate us from you,
nor will anything be enough to disturb
our happiness.
Oh, may I have the same fate
of being persecuted and dying
for Christ!
